Angelina Jolie Rejected Charlie’s Angels

When Angelina Jolie turned down Charlie's Angels after producers promised it would make her a "big star": "The idea of being a big star has absolutely no appeal to me"

Angelina Jolie is a versatile actress who has almost every genre of film under her belt, so it's no surprise that she was offered a role opposite Cameron Diaz in the popular American action comedy Charlie's Angels, but the actress respectfully turned it down. The film went on to star Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. Browse below for more on why Jolie has stepped down from directing the MCG.

Jolie is now one of Hollywood's A-listers, and by the time the aforementioned film was released, she was already an acclaimed star with a number of notable credits to her name, including an Oscar in the supporting category in 2000 for her role in Girl, Interrupted. So the lure of fame and exposure of doing the action comedy alongside Cameron was not much of a draw to get her on board for the film.

The 2000 film Charlie's Angels was distributed by Columbia Pictures, and in an interview with Premiere via 9 Types, Angelina Jolie once spoke about the reasons for her rejection of the role. She said, "When [Columbia Pictures] sent me the script for Charlie's Angels, they said there were three reasons why I should do it. She continued, "They said there hadn't been any really good, strong roles for women; that it would make me a big star; and that I would have fun doing it.

Angelina Jolie did not find the film particularly appealing, as her acting skills were already on the rise at the time. She said: "All my roles so far in Gia, Wallace, Playing By Heart and The Bone Collector have been strong female roles. There is absolutely NO appeal to me in the idea of being a big STAR".

Commenting on the Charlie's Angels script and the star power of Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz at the time, Angelina Jolie said, "Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz are already celebrities and they're going to have a lot of fun spoofing their images with Charlie's Angels. I'm not at that point in my career yet. The audience won't have as much fun seeing me running around in high heels, chasing bad guys and flipping my hair".

In another interview with Film Ink, Jolie revealed that the scale of Charlie's Angels was another reason she turned it down, saying, "Plus, I don't want to be exposed in a really big film. Instead, she decided to do a different kind of action movie, Gone in 60 Seconds, opposite Nicholas Cage.
